Disable Compound TCP
- Vista and some other operating systems have something called "Compound TCP". [1]. If enabled, it may prevent a successful installation. To accomodate it, you have to:
- Go to the command prompt (go to lower left of your screen, hit the icon ("Start" or a circle) and write CMD in the input/search area right above your cursor. A black screen will emerge).
- See this link [2] for specific commands for your particular operating system.
- You will have to disable it while updating your modem, then enable it again at the end.
Disable Wireless
- You must disable wireless during almost any modem firmware changes. Simply logging off your wireless will not work.
- Go to Network Connections (Vista: Control Panel->Network and Internet -> Network Connections).
- Double click on Wireless Internet Connection and hit Disable at the bottom of the screen.
Enable TFTP
- Wise to do even if you do not intend to use it; if the web GUI goes down, you may have to. See TFTP Tools.
Hard Reset or 30/30/30 Reset
Ping
- Go to the cmd screen (Windows: go to lower left of your screen, hit the icon ("Start" or a circle) and write CMD in the input/search area right above your cursor. A black screen will emerge).
- To ping a modem, enter "ping 192.168.1.1" (or whatever the modem should be). Hit enter.
Power Cycle
- Simply means unplugging your router, waiting about 10 seconds, and plugging it back in.
